DAVIES Hugh "Pop"  NEW

Local Couple Celebrate Golden Wedding 1958

Fifty years ago in Kilbernie, Scotland, wedding bells rang for Hugh Davies and Jean Morrison.

From Kilburnie the scene changes to Gnowangerup and we now find " Pop and Gran" Davies a loveable old couple celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversay.
The passing years have brought them full measure of joys and sorrows but rewarded them with prizes money cannot buy - youthful minds and a respected place in the estimation of their fellow men.
The fifth son in a family of ten children "Pop" commenced work as a grocer's boy on leaving school and has remained in the trade til today.

The Davies came to Australia with their two sons in 1924 and Mr. Davies commenced duties in the Shackleton Co-op as a counter hand.

During the depression he took over the management of that Co-op and under his direction the business was put on a sound basis and weathered those troublesome times.
During the family's 21 years in Shackleton, Mr. Davies took an active part in the public life of that community and on leaving the district the football club gave him a gold medal as a token of esteem.

Pop still prizes this medal along with one won by his father at bowls in 1881 at Kilbernie.

From Shackleton Mr. & Mrs. Davies went to Brookton but were there only 12 months.

In 1946 Pop and his son, Hugh purchased the general storekeeping and agency business owned by Mrs. C. L.
Heppell in Gnowangerup.

The partnership of Davies & Son has prospered over the passed twelve years and has erected a modern shop of which the town can be proud.

We join with the many today when we congratulate Gran and Pop Davies on their fiftieth wedding anniversary, and we wish them many more years of happy companionship.

We apologize to Mrs. Davies if she feels Pop has stolen the limelight in our little write-up, but everyone knows one partner can only be as good as the other permits. So, on this score, Gran, it appears you get top marks.
